Whigham, D.F. and Simpson, R.L., 1978. The relationship between aboveground and belowground biomass of freshwater tidal wetland macrophytes. Aquat. Bot., 5: 355--364. Aboveground and belowground biomass relationships of 15 annual and perennial freshwater tidal wetland macrophytes were examined. The data showed that regression equations may be used with confidence to estimate belowground biomass from aboveground biomass for most species. The linear regression model was suitable except for one species which had a large belowground component and for which the exponential model was more appropriate. Belowground:aboveground biomass ratios were significantly different for the 8 annual species examined. At peak biomass, all annuals allocated less than one third of the total net annual production into belowground structures. They exhibited distinct seasonal patterns of biomass allocation with more biomass incorporated into belowground components during the early part of the growing season. Perennial species exhibited 4 patterns of biomass allocation with Peltandra virginiea (L.) Kunth having a significantly greater mean belowground: aboveground biomass ratio than other perennials. Factors that may control biomass allocation patterns include depth of rooting and life history strategies.

A Hybrid Model for Mapping Relative Differences in Belowground Biomass and Root: Shoot Ratios Using Spectral Reflectance, Foliar N and Plant Biophysical Data within Coastal Marsh
Broad-scale estimates of belowground biomass are needed to understand wetland resiliency and C and N cycling, but these estimates are difficult to obtain because root:shoot ratios vary considerably both within and between species. We used remotely-sensed estimates of two aboveground plant characteristics, aboveground biomass and % foliar N to explore biomass allocation in low diversity freshwat...

We examined patterns of habitat function (plant species richness), productivity (plant aboveground biomass and total C), and nutrient stocks (N and P in aboveground plant biomass and soil) in tidal marshes of the Satilla, Altamaha, and Ogeechee Estuaries in Georgia, USA. We worked at two sites within each salinity zone (fresh, brackish, and saline) in each estuary, sampling a transect from the ...

This study was undertaken to determine the relationships between the biomass, morphometry, and density of short shoots (SS) of the tropical seagrass Thalassia testudinum and the physical-environmental forcing in the region. Seasonal sampling surveys were undertaken four times in Bahia de la Ascension, a shallow estuary in the western Mexican Caribbean, to measure plant morphology and environmen...
متن کاملRemotely-Sensed Indicators of N-Related Biomass Allocation in Schoenoplectus acutus
Coastal marshes depend on belowground biomass of roots and rhizomes to contribute to peat and soil organic carbon, accrete soil and alleviate flooding as sea level rises. For nutrient-limited plants, eutrophication has either reduced or stimulated belowground biomass depending on plant biomass allocation response to fertilization. Within a freshwater wetland impoundment receiving minimal sedime...

Predictions of how salt marsh primary production and carbon storage will respond to environmental change can be improved through detailed datasets documenting responses to real-world environmental variation. To address a shortage of detailed studies of natural variation, we examined drivers of Spartina alterniflora stem allometry and productivity in seven marshes across three regions in souther...
